Mayor Mike Duggan announced today that the new transit center at the former Michigan State Fairgrounds will be named the Jason Hargrove Transit Center, in honor of the late DDOT Driver Jason Hargrove. Hargrove's advocacy for driver safety during the COVID-19 pandemic touched the hearts of many, leading to the decision to dedicate the transit center to his memory.

"When Jason died, it broke all our hearts. He was doing everything right, showing up to work at the onset of a pandemic to make people could get where they needed. He was supporting his family. And he was trying to keep himself and others safe," said Mayor Mike Duggan. “Jason was a hero to all of us, and for the next 100 years, he will be remembered by everyone who uses this beautiful new transit center."

Desha Hargrove, Jason's wife, expressed her gratitude for the honor, saying, "What a profound honor it is to dedicate this terminal in memory of my beloved husband, Jason Hargrove. With unwavering courage and boundless compassion, he tirelessly drove each passenger through the challenges of our time."

Desha plans to move back to Detroit from Texas with three of her children and work for the city's building safety department in customer service. The Mayor was joined by Desha and their children for the announcement, highlighting the importance of honoring Jason's legacy.

The Jason Hargrove Transit Center will be the centerpiece of a $31 million redevelopment project at the former Michigan State Fairgrounds. The transit center will feature modern facilities including retail options, an indoor lobby, public waiting area, ticket office, and restrooms for both the public and transit operators.

Interim Executive Director of Transit G. Michael Staley emphasized the significance of naming the transit center after Hargrove, stating, "Jason Hargrove remains in the hearts and minds of those who knew him best. His legacy will be enshrined at the DDOT Transit Center that bears his name."

The new transit center is expected to become operational in early May, serving Detroit Department of Transportation and SMART riders, as well as other transportation users. The project aims to provide a state-of-the-art facility that honors Jason Hargrove's dedication to public service and safety during challenging times.
